A mother-of-three has shared a moving photo of her cancer-ridden son being comforted by two adorable puppies.
Shan Benson revealed that her son Jack had been diagnosed with cancer just days after the family acquired the new dogs.
“When the news came I thought maybe we needed to return the pups,” she wrote on the Love What Matters Facebook page. “But we didn’t. We knew the puppies would bring joy to my older twin boys and to my son going through treatment.”
Upon encountering the pups nestling with her sleeping boy while he was recovering from chemotherapy, she knew she’d made the right decision.
“After Jack started chemo and became sick and weak he always asked to have the puppies sleep with him. One morning, I walked into his room to look in on him and my heart grew full when I saw this,” she wrote.
The heartfelt post amassed thousands of likes, with many other parents eager to share their own experiences dealing with childhood cancer and the beloved pets who helped them through it.
“We lost Bear one year after my son’s cancer diagnosis. He got my little boy through the toughest parts of treatment. Best friends,” shared Facebook user Kim Rex.
Alex Pitt recounted a similar story: “I was pregnant with twins but sadly lost one of my boys due to TTTS, the same day we went to get a puppy. Little did I know she’s what I needed and she loves my survivor as well. They’re the best of friends. Animals are around and help us through so much.”
