Fred Hutch - Cures Start Here
At Fred Hutch, our interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists and humanitarians work together to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases. Our researchers, including three Nobel laureates, bring a relentless pursuit of, and passion for, health knowledge and hope to their work and the world.
Together, our researchers are discovering new ways to detect cancers earlier, when cure rates are highest; developing effective treatments with fewer side effects; and learning how to prevent cancers from growing in the first place.
Our groundbreaking discoveries began in the 1970s with Dr. E. Donnall Thomas’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation, which led to him receiving the 1990 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Since then, Hutch researchers have made a number of breakthroughs, including developing immunotherapies that use the immune system to defeat cancer and advancing the understanding of human biology.
Admittedly, the eradication of cancer and other life-threatening diseases is an ambitious goal, one that demands tenacity, scientific excellence, collaboration and breakthrough creativity. To accomplish this, Fred Hutch attracts some of the world’s greatest minds.

Training the Next Generation of Scientific Leaders
Fred Hutch is committed to training the current and next generation of scientific leaders from diverse backgrounds. Our programs train scientists at all academic levels and help educators bring scientific research to school-age students. We are proud to introduce high school and undergraduate students to the thrills and challenges of scientific research in preparation for further study and advanced degrees. Our graduate degree and postdoctoral training programs prepare trainees to lead research and transition to independent careers. Training and professional development for faculty emphasize mentoring, leadership, and effective research management skills. All programs foster a love of science, a deeper understanding of biomedical research, and cultivate the skills necessary to succeed at each level.
Fred Hutch is a leading research institution dedicated to promoting an inclusive environment and enhancing diversity among the next generation of scientists through participation in our training and education programs. Our training opportunities reflect the many biomedical disciplines and research interests pursued at Fred Hutch. Thus, students can train in basic, clinical, or public health sciences-focused research across a range of cancer and infectious disease topics that address fundamental aspects of biology and medicine.

Divisions
Clinical Research Division: The Clinical Research Division’s investigators conduct laboratory and patient-oriented research to better understand the mechanisms that drive cancer and other human diseases.
Integrating a variety of disciplines, our clinical researchers are continually developing new therapeutic approaches and leading clinical trials that help move discoveries from laboratory to patient. Our pioneering research has saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
Human Biology Division: Human Biology researchers come together to form a multidisciplinary team that is influenced by individual advances. Their diverse expertise include molecular and cell biology, genomics, genetics, virology, infectious disease, computational biology, pathology and clinical research. Grounded in high-quality basic science, the research performed in Human Biology blends fundamental, applied, and translational research performed in model organisms and in vitro systems.
