Cancer Type – Lung
Bio – Bob Marley -“Don’t worry about a thing, every little thing is gonna be alright.” – Reggae Legend Bob Marley.
Short Story – The reggae legend left the world in 1981 at the young age of 36. Playing soccer with friends a few short years earlier (1977), he injured his foot which led him to see a doctor. Diagnosed with melanoma, an amputation of the toe was recommended.
Bob Marley was a devout Rastafarian, which plays a role into his diagnosis. One of the beliefs, amputation is sinful. A second belief is death is not a certainty, and that truly holy people will gain immortality in their physical bodies.
His medical records were never made public, however by late summer of 1980, the cancer had metastasized throughout his entire body. His last performance was in Pittsburgh in September of 1980.
In an attempt to find a holistic cure, he flew to Germany to be cared for by Josef Issels. He soon realized his cancer was terminal and chose to fly home to spend his last days at home in Jamaica. He died in Miami during a plane layover on May 11, 1981. According to some reports, his final words spoken to his son ZIggy Marley: “Money can’t buy life.”
Your music lives on Bob Marley. Thank you for the gift.
