A cancer diagnosis, any cancer diagnosis, comes with a monstrous list of challenges. Your sense of normal has just been thrown for a loop. Most of us are more or less assigned a doctor, but what about other things? Are you going to need reconstructive surgery? Prosthetics? What if you can’t muster the energy to clean your house?
Thankfully, there are a ton of folks out there that are willing and ready to help. We encourage you to navigate over to our page dedicated to Local Cancer Resources. Here you will find a map of the United States, with links to cities for which we have compiled a list of providers. Don’t see your city listed? Don’t despair – we are diligently working every day to add more cities and more providers to this list. With that, let’s take some time today to talk about the amazing services and providers you can find in these listings.
As I mentioned above, when we are diagnosed, a doctor is more or less assigned to us. But often times, we want to know if we have other options. Perhaps we don’t feel comfortable with a doctor or their office is just too far from home. As an example, our page for San Antonio, TX has a listing of Cancer Treatment Providers that are available for your consideration. Similarly, you will also find listings for Oncology Doctors and Plastic Surgeons, should you find yourself in need of reconstructive procedures.
Also included in our listings are Hospice Care (home healthcare) providers. Although we don’t want to think about that being necessary, for many people with cancer, it is a reality. If you or a loved one find yourselves in this position, we highly recommend visiting with multiple providers. Just as comfort with your treatment team is vital, so is your comfort with home healthcare professionals. We also want to remind you that some insurance plans, such as Medicare Part A, may cover parts of hospice care give certain criteria are met.
With many types of cancer, a patient may also find themselves in need of specialized medical equipment. These can range from oxygen machines to hospital beds to wheelchairs and everything in between. Again, like hospice care, many of these items may be covered by your insurance. We are pleased to be able to offer listings of medical equipment providers for many of the areas we have surveyed.
A fact that many people don’t know is that under most insurance plans, cancer drugs and treatments such as immunotherapy and chemotherapy are covered by you prescription benefit rather that the regular medical insurance. One thing that I cannot emphasize enough is to sign up for Medicare Part D (prescription coverage) when you become eligible, and check to ensure that you have prescription coverage if you are on a private or employer sponsored plan.
In the event that you find yourself in need of help with prescription drugs, or even an home delivery pharmacy, check out our listing of providers of prescription meds. Very often you will find that the professionals at your local friendly pharmacy are more than happy to help you sort out your medication needs.
Last, but certainly not least in our listings of medical type assistance, is counseling services. Simply put – cancer ain’t easy on anyone – be it the patient, caregiver, or loved ones. Having someone to talk to, someone to listen, someone that has seen similar issues – can be a huge asset for anyone in a cancer journey. Remember – our mental health has huge impacts on our physical health. So, if you feel the need to talk to someone, please do. It is a sign of strength!
As if dealing with cancer isn’t enough, oftentimes patients and their families will find themselves in need of legal help. From dealing with billing and insurance to potential loss of employment, to help in filing for disability, these legal professionals can help guide you and your loved ones through the murky waters of the legal world.
Speaking of filing for disability, I want to share this story with you. A dear friend of my family’s needed to file for disability due to a crippling disease. Despite perfect documentation, she was turned down on her first filing. After consulting with legal professionals, she was told that a vast majority of filings are routinely turned down the first time around. Why am I mentioning this? Well, dearest friends, I want you to know that there is help out there and that there is hope even if you get turned down the first time. The attorney explained that this automatic rejection of first filings is thought of as a way to weed out fraudulent claims – the mindset being those that really need it, will fight for it. So, here is my message – don’t give up! Consult a professional for advice and help with disability filings!
Prosthetics and other products and services
Unless you have found yourself in the need for these types of products, you probably haven’t given a lot of thought on where to go to find the best/quality prosthetics or other items in this list. Although our listing of prosthetics providers is more national rather than local, we encourage you to check out the listings available. Educate yourself on what is on the market so you can make a well-informed decision.
Wigs and head coverings are also an important category to remember. Finding a good wig shop, with quality products can make the difference between an uncomfortable product and making you feel more like yourself again. If you don’t see a listing that is close to you, also consider calling beauty/hair dressing schools in your area for recommendations – they use wigs all the time in their training programs and can likely offer you some great advice!
A side effect of some platinum-containing chemotherapy drugs is hearing loss. These losses can come and go or be more permanent. Regardless of the case, you may choose to seek the services of an audiologist that can help fit you with a hearing aid to fit your needs.
Finally, we understand how much cancer can sap your energy, how time-consuming it is, and not to mention smell aversions following cancer treatments. You guessed it – cleaning the house. If you are in need of someone to help out around the house, please look at our listings for cleaning services in your area.
